The collection includes the private and official correspondence covering Evatt's private and public life mainly from the period of his term as Attorney-General and Minister of External Affairs and as Leader of the Australian Labor Party in Opposition; newspaper cuttings; printed matter relating to the ALP, and the Federal Elections of 1940-1959; United Nations 1943-1949; the Petrov Affair; legal material; Evatt family correspondence and history, some Chifley correspondence. It also contains a large collection of photographs and political cartoons, memorabilia, books, journals, pamphlets and manuscripts of books and articles published by Evatt. Monographs from Evatt's personal library have been catalogued as well as more recently published works on Evatt's life and the period in which he lived, which have been added to the Collection since 1970. A comprehensive index to the files exists as well as an index to the Press clippings and a list of personal items. Member of the Australian Labor Party from the early 1920's. His political positions included Attorney-General and Minister for External Affairs, 1941-1949, Deputy Prime Minister, 1946-1949, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, 1950. He was President of the General Assembly of United Nations, 1946-1948. Later he was leader of the Opposition and Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.
